‘Irregularities’ in the diesel engine have caused Toyota to halt the shipment of three models to India.

New Delhi: Following the discovery of “irregularities” in the certification testing for the diesel powerplant, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has decided to temporarily halt the country’s deliveries of its three models, the Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux. On January 29, 2024, Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO), a business connected to Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), declared that three diesel engine types had anomalies in their horsepower output certification testing.

In India, the Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux are vehicles that utilize these engines.

When approached about the matter, a Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) representative issued a statement in which they stated, “The irregularities concern the smoothing of power and torque curves but did not lead to any over-stating or over-claims on horsepower, torque, or other powertrain related values.”

According to the firm, the problem does not affect the safety or emissions of the impacted vehicles.

Toyota is reconfirming the information utilized in the impacted vehicles’ certification in collaboration with the appropriate authorities. Therefore, the carmaker stated that in the event of TKM, the shipping of the impacted vehicles will also be temporarily halted.

Nonetheless, TKM stated that it would still accept new orders for the three models. The company said that it will thoroughly explain this condition to consumers for cars that have already been dispatched but have not yet been delivered to them.

It went on to say: “We would like to reassure our existing customers by stating that we believe their vehicles are unaffected by these irregularities, as this did not result in any variations in horsepower, torque or other powertrain-related values.”

Furthermore, according to TKM, this has not affected the cars’ safety or emissions.

“Nevertheless, TKM sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience and concern this irregularity may cause to our customers and other stakeholders,” it continued.

In India, the Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux make up over one-third of TKM’s total sales.

The impacted engines are used in ten vehicles worldwide, six of which are in Japan.
