The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said that overall new car sales in January increased 8.2% to 147,876 units, the highest level since 2020. The strong demand in the fleet market contributed to this growth.

In a statement, SMMT CEO Mike Hawes said, “Manufacturers have been asked to supply the vehicles, we now ask the government to help consumers buy the vehicles on which net zero depends.”

The forecast for total new car sales in 2024 has increased to 4,000 units, but the market share of UK battery electric vehicle Sales has decreased to 21% throughout the year, from the 22.3% predicted in October.
